How to visit Grand Canyon: where to stay, routes and how to get around
Main itineraries
The park covers a very large area and it is impossible to see everything in the same day.
Tourists usually decide to visit only the part closest to the town where they are staying; others decide to spend several days so as to be able to see at least two areas.
Hiking and trekking enthusiasts are the ones who stay longer in the Grand Canyon as they hike for several days following the various trails.
Here are the routes we recommend:
South Rim Grand Canyon: one or two days to discover the main points of the park by car or bus. Usually you drive along Hermit Road and stop at Trailview Overlook, Maricopa Point, Powell Point, Hopi Point, Mohave Point, The Abyss, Monument Creek Vista, Pima Point, Hermits Rest.
The advice is to stay at least one night in the park to witness the sunrise and sunset.North Rim Grand Canyon: for those who want to see wilderness and uncrowded places. One day is enough if you are not trekking to visit Bright Angel Point and drive along the Cape Royal Road stopping at the various viewpoints and doing the Cape Royal Trail.
North and South Grand Canyon: at least three days and two nights are required to visit both sides. The first day you visit the North Rim, then by a shuttle organised by the park, in 4 hours you reach the South where you stay overnight and the following day you visit the main attractions
West Rim Grand Canyon is visited starting from Las Vegas in one day and allows you to see the Skywalk and Guano Point, as well as fly over the Canyon on a scenic flight.
The entireGrand Canyon: A minimum of four days is required to visit the entire park. The first day you visit the North Rim, then move to the South and finally reach the West Rim Grand Canyon.
Where to stay
The best places to stay are thehotels and campsites within the park, which are the most expensive but also the first to be overbooked.
In the South Rim there are 3 campsites and 7 resorts, alternatively if you can't find space you can choose facilities a few kilometres from the entrance or stay overnight in Williams which is 100 km away or in Tuba City 95 km away.
In the North Rim, on the other hand, there are only 1 campsite and 1 hotel to be booked well in advance. Or you can stay in facilities 20/30 km away (also often full) or in the town of Kanab 125 km away.
Finally, at the West Rim, the only structure is the Hualapai Ranch, but visitors often arrive from Las Vegas in the day or sleep in Kingman, about 110 km from the entrance.
Getting around
Although at off-peak times it is possible to enter the North and South areas with your own car, it is advisable to always move around the park with the free shuttle buses that make continuous stops and stops that allow you to get on and off when you want.
These buses are also suitable for those with disabilities or in wheelchairs.
For the West Rim, however, it is always necessary to use the shuttles provided by the park and leave your car outside.
To travel from the North to the South entrance there are daily shuttles that take 4 hours, while to reach the West you need your own car.
How much does it cost to visit the Grand Canyon? Prices, offers and advice
Visiting the Grand Canyon, like other American parks, is quite expensive, especially if you decide to stay in the interior and make the various excursions by helicopter, horseback or scenic plane.
The best thing if you want to save money is to book well in advance and sleep in the facilities just outside the parks. If you then want to go on excursions, consider that panoramic flights cost around €200.00 / €250.00 per person.
If you are staying in Las Vegas, group tours can be worthwhile.
